Match Report

1st XI v Stapleton (H)

Sunday, 20th May 2012
National Village Knockout, 2nd Round

As I wiped the sleet off my winscreen this morning I wondered if the cricket season really had begun? was it May? Why was I wearing two sweaters for the Youth Team practise, and how did we beat the Germans in a penalty shoot out? Yes folks its still freezing here at Chew Court today for the visit of the Village of Stapleton.

The Avon & Somerset group is now so sparsely populated that a win today puts us into the Quarter Finals.

Stapleton batted first on another green pudding (somewhat like my desert at a local hostelry, but without the custard).

The visitors found the going tough as Hosier and Beedell (off his long run) bowled tight lines giving nothing away. Phillips (42) Millard (22) and Chidgey (59 not) all got starts but the accelerator was never really pressed and a final score of 179 for 6 off their 40 overs was just about reasonable but nothing more.

After tea the Chew openers were quickly separated as Adam Blower was LBW to Morris for 2. Four for 1 off 2, not a good start. However the Beedell & Denning show was about to begin. I must admit I missed much of this as I was absent hurt at the dinner table. However I was told it was top drawer and when I arrived we were 57 for 1 off 12.

The two continued to defy the odds and built a hundred stand before Dash went for 34. Nick carried on as the usual Chew collapse ensued at the other end. Blower (0) Solomon (0) Thompson (1) But cometh the hour cometh the man, or in this case the three Amigos. After Nick went for a spirited 75 it was left to the heavy mob to finish the job. And I mean heavy. Pat Jones 3 pounds over his fighting weight, The burly Mondair (now slimmed down a bit) and Tim "The Ox" Sage were our last hope. Apart from Jamie "Hightower" Dawson and Hose.

Well Pat smashed a rapid 13, Ken only got 2, and then Tim and Hightower finished the job with 4 fours and a six to win the match. A great result for sure. We won it, lost it, then won it again.

Well done to Captain Solly and his band of fitness fanatics. Another win against Stapleton, that's 3 - 1 in our favour now and don't forget they are playing two levels above us, so its a very good achievement to beat them again.

Champagne moment, Tim Sage's six over moo corner to win the game.

CJ Hole numpty moment: didn't really see anything too stupid, though Charlie Thompson's attempt at a late cut to a vicious off spinner comes close.
