Match Report

1st XI v Street (A)

Saturday, 7th June 2003
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

We arrived at the Victoria club to find the best track we had seen this season. Hard, flat and with just a tinge of green in it. We were a bit under strength because Andy and Richard were unavailable. Never the less having won the toss we decided to bat. As I've mentioned before, we are much better posting than chasing. Iain and Sam Kirk opened the batting, and we soon found out that although the pitch was a cracker, the humid conditions were making the ball swing like the back end of Luke's car. All over the place! The bat was passed every other ball and it was just a matter of time before we started to loose wickets. Iain was caught at slip, Sam was bowled and we were 12 for 2. The Oz looked good until swishing at an "outie" and nicked a feint one to the keeper. Bung and Ken were bowled by "innies" from the other end and we were sunk.

At 28 for 5 the writing was on the wall, and most of it was unpronounceable. At least the language from those dismissed batsmen coming off the pitch was. We certainly didn't help ourselves with some of the shots that were played. Chris Hole departed bowled and Ben played on to leave us completely stuffed at 32 for 7. Ali followed shortly after caught on the fence which left us tail enders to wag a bit. Sadly Jason edged to the keeper and Chris Holley slogged at fresh air. All out 44. What an embarrassment. We came in and then went out to field as the tea was still being made. It looked impossible to bowl them out for 43 on that wicket, and so it proved. Although Rhys did get one wicket they cruised to victory in 16 overs. We went back in and attacked the now finished tea which was of top quality. Games like these do come along from time to time, lets hope we don't have any more this season.
