Match Report

1st XI v Burnham (H)

Saturday, 28th June 2003
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

More fine weather and warm temperatures greeted our visitors to Chew Court on this day. Burnham came to complete the first half of the season and in fact the first half of a competition between the two clubs. The club finishing highest will win 500.00 courtesy of one of Ali's wealthy relatives. The tenth Earl of Felton I think ? Anyway, with money on the line we wanted to get back to winning ways against one of our nearest neighbours. Locky won the toss and we batted on what looked a good strip. This was not altogether the case though, as a week without rain had made the top a bit dry and there was some loose bits in amongst the grass which caused the ball to do some funny things. We made a slow start against Broggers and TC, but didn't lose early wickets, until Andy tried to pull Coombes and was caught at backward point by Broggers. Then Dickie got one that bounced and played on, Ken was given out lbw and we were in trouble at 43 for 3. We crawled past 100 and then lost a couple more wickets before a reasonable slog in the last 10 saw us post 164 for 9. This was OK, but the wicket had probably cost us 20 or 30 so we were reasonably happy at tea.

After tea we needed quick wickets if we were to stand a chance. We knew that they had a longish tail, and we just needed some early wickets to put us in with a chance. Unfortunately Graham Puddy had other ideas, and as a Puddy will do on 2 or 3 occasions a year he put bat to ball and flayed our attack to all parts. Anything off line or length was whacked in no uncertain manner. A couple of monstrous sixes over the paddock and the trees showed his intentions. This is how he plays and maybe we should have been ready, but after 20 overs the game was over as a contest with Mr Puddy scoring a rapid 80 out of the 100 on the board. He finally went to a skier which Muddy bravely got under. Had time to finish his tea before it came down. The rest of the match returned to normal as Burnham worked their way to the target with plenty in hand.

More work to do to get back up the table, but we can do it, and with some easier games coming up in the next few weeks, we should do a bit better than of late.
