Match Report

1st XI v Butleigh (A)

Sunday, 22nd June 2003
National Village Knockout, Area Final

The weather was hot and humid as we made our way to the picturesque ground at Butleigh. This must be the only ground I know of with a dirty great house/castle/folly at square leg. Most impressive it is too. Chew won the toss and put Butleigh in on a greenish, hard ish, good looking ish strip. We thought we had done the right thing when I had the opener out caught behind in the second over. However, the Butleigh batting line up was formidable. They were relying on getting a big score with their Millfield big guns at the top of the order. This is precisely what happened. Although we had early success we didn't take enough wickets and the middle order and even some of the later batsmen all piled on the agony with our bowling being clubbed to all parts. 4 out of the top 5 got 50+ and with some lusty hitting from the tail they ended up a very impressive 269 for 8.

At tea, the worst thing happened, it rained. Not your monsoon stuff which we wanted, just a steady light rain enough to keep us off. Although we lost time, the game would still be 40 overs for us to face and then if it was called off, the faster over rate would win. We new we had to score at 6.8 per over to keep up with the rate should it rain. No luxury of waiting for the change bowlers and having a swing. This meant shots from ball 1. This meant wickets from over 5, we lost them steadily and were never in the hunt. Having said that, the opening bowler down the hill did the business with 5 for .... Then the rain returned and we were brought off by the umpires needing 15 an over off the last 9. OK if you've got Andy Flintoff at the crease, but me and Locky? Naahhh! We finished up at about 134 for 8.

We all felt a bit hard done by as we trooped off to the pub But the landlord had laid on a good spread of chips and sausage rolls etc so we soon cheered up. Still next year, who knows, maybe we can avoid Butleigh, Hambrook and Timsbury and get a bye to the final??
