Match Report

1st XI v Peasedown St John (H)

Saturday, 6th August 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

Chew Magna banished any worries they had of dropping into the relegation dog fight with a convincing win over near neighbours Peasedown St John. Batting first under grey skies at Chew Court, Chew posted an impressive 215 for 9 off their 45 overs. A solid start by openers Paul King and Iain Locke produced a stand of exactly 100 before King went for 66 bowled by Joyce. With Ken Mondair going for just 6 it was up to Nick Beedell 32 and the middle order to push the score along. This they did, and despite a mini collapse at the end where we lost 3 wickets for 3 runs, a score of 215 was always going to be tough for PSJ.

After tea the two Filers opened up the bowling. The PSJ openers Wilkinson and Denning are most definitely the prized wickets and they contributed 16 and 38 respectively to give PSJ a reasonable start. After they went though it was left to Goode and Indian overseas player Sil to keep up the run chase. They were successful, both scoring well, 36 and 42. Sadly for PSJ though when When Sil went for 42, bowled by the impressive Dave Filer (12, 1, 4 for 57) the tail fell away badly. A couple of run outs and a wicket for the improving Holley signalled the end. PSJ finished on 184 for 9 off their alloted 45 overs 31 runs short.

This victory stopped the run of 3 successive defeats which had Chew dropping from third to dangerously near the wrong end of the table. One more win should preserve their Division one status for 2006.
