1st XI v Twyford House (H)
Saturday, 11th July 2015
West of England Premier League
Bristol & North Somerset
So it's a Saturday night and I'm drinking cider after the mighty Chew have actually won another game of cricket. England have also gone 1 up in the Ashes so Watto has “a party to go to” (of course…), the Pelican is busy, cider is flowing and the Chew Magna massive are all happy bunnies. “Who took the wickets?” “Who scored the runs?” I hear you call. Well, sit down my little pumpkins, make a nice cup of tea, and I will reveal all.
"It rained at 12.32am till 3.55am" Charlie said as we all turned up at the ground for the visit of Twyford House. Now, I thought, either: (1) it's a funny time to feed the chickens or (2) Charlie had gone out on a Friday. Again. “Go out last night then Char?” I asked. "No, not out out, I was home by 4". “Oh, that's all right then” Cap’n Dash replied. And so we warmed up. With Herman gone to Pride in the centre, Daws kept his place.
Hot sticky day, so if our skipper wins the toss he's deffo batting we all say. So the Co-op is raided of ice lollies and lashings of ginger beer, and we all sit and watch our skipper toss. (This was going to boil up into quite an adventure.) He wins, of course, and he bowls, of course, so my twister ice lolly is back in the fridge and it’s bowling boots on.
Me and Rowan bowl ok, Rowan getting some decent swing (me not) but we pick up a few wickets and with the King back bowling with Charlie the famous squeeze was on. Ken doing a Simply Red and rolling back the years to end up with 3 for 36 off his 10.
We keep getting wickets at the right time for a change and we soon get them all out for 138. Surely even we can't throw this away...
We have tea first and a fantastic effort it was: wraps making a first appearance of the season and some somosas (they’re Indian pasties, Charlie).
We bat, and Leo and Dash go well till Leo gets a LBW and Dash chips one to cover, but Watto and Vile bat well till Vile chooses to toss his wicket away like pooh threw pooh sticks into the stream. The last time he got all Tigger and charged down the wicket only to get his bails whipped off like pooh at the honey pot, the bowler was called Claire.
But out strides big Jamie Dawson and he bats really well and really sensible – which I've never seen before – and we cruise home by 7 wickets.
Winning cider tastes loads better than losing cider and it shows we can play.
Staplegun away on Saturday, but no nets on Wednesday as it's the mighty Chew Magna versus the Pelican on Wednesday night. Be nice to see you all at the ground.
