1st XI v Shirehampton (A)
Saturday, 29th August 2015
West of England Premier League
Bristol & North Somerset
Before I dust off the keyboard for the very last time, I’m going to give you a little known fact to start the match report and it is this: people think that Captain Sensible’s hit "Glad it's all over" was about the Falklands war. Well, they’re wrong. It was wrote about Chew’s season. We miss out on staying in the WEPL big boys league by a few points and it’s off to the B&D for the tiny village side. But in cricket as in life you have to take the crunchy with the smooth, and this is how it went on the last day of the season.
We start the day needing 6 points to make sure of staying in WEPL. So we warm up in the sunshine at Shirehampton. It’s been a wet week and the covers and the groundsman at Shire have done a good job in getting the game on, but it's a good toss to win and we don't. So in very loose terms FilerG bats but everyone else values their wickets like a left over Chinese on a Friday night. We scrape to 125 and get a solitary batting point.
A fantastic tea was taken. We then bowl tight lines to a degree, but with only 125 to get they can take no risks and get in for 3 down in the 44th over.
So there you go – the whole story of the season in one game really. We just didn't get enough runs and that's it in a nut shell. We finish mid-table and that's where we deserve to be in my honest opinion. But we've had some great times, some great wins, we’ve played some lovely teams, ate some brilliant teas and drunk one or two Apple-based drinks...
Elvis has left the building. Thank you, and good night.
