Match Report

1st XI v Bristol Asians (A)

Saturday, 7th May 2016
Bristol & District Cricket League
Senior Division

Season 2016 was set to start away at the Bristol Asians and the Chew Magna CC 1st XI duly selected could not wait for the off. The new cricket only Whatsapp group was inundated with banter despite the ban as emotion and excitement overwhelmed the players but crucially not the captain who raised the spirits and set expectations for the season in a rousing speech during the warm up as Coach Wheelie focussed on the 2s.

As we sat listening in preparation for toss we soaked up the stunning views of the Cotswolds to the North with the smell of newly cut grass in our nostrils and more than one man and their respective dogs in the building crowd. To cap it all the sun shone as Dash called…incorrectly and we were stuck in on a sporting wicket.

Dash, with a fine ton in the warm ups quickly smashed a boundary, then just as quickly nicked off to slip and was quickly followed by his opening partner playing across the line. Two down for thirty but WattoLegend and new Chew Ace Tejas found life and the fast outfield to their liking and took Chew to an imposing 94 for 2 in 20. From here it should have been a question of 225 or how many more but if anyone can collapse Chew can and there followed a merry dance of bowled, caught behind, caught, bowled, helmet on pavilion roof and dropped by the keeper but LBW anyway. Tejas top scoring with 64 and Chew bundled out for a disappointing 157

In the colourful surroundings of the lounge in the pavilion tea was served with BS’s ‘extra special’ chicken curry on offer. It was magnificent – succulent, spicy and aromatic - Chew’s best ever and greatly appreciated scorer even had a 3rd helping. It is rumoured that the Chew bowling attack only fires when well fed and it should be noted that Shaun had seconds and Filer G only had crisps.

Bristol Asians got off to an electric start firing boundaries off Filer G and even straight through the hands of mid-on but a curry fired Hosier is not a bowler to be taken lightly and with virtually nothing in his favour and a division winning batting line up in opposition what happened next was even hotter than the curry at tea. Wicket! (bowled), Wicket! (LBW), Wicket! (LBW), Wicket (bowled) – Hosier was on fire.

With Filer G a little perplexed at the other end the skipper decided you can have too much of a good thing and switched the bowling at both ends…it was the same result at the Hosier end as Big James O’Connell climbed in with 3 quick wickets of his own to leave BS teetering on the brink. At the other end it was still a struggle with Char deposited into Pavilion – but no one puts Triple C # Thompson Out (CCC#TO) in the pavilion and next time it was straight up in the air and straight back to the pavilion for the batsman.

Michelle Hosier came back into the attack and it was left to father and son to complete the victory – Will picking up his first 1st XI league scalp following a miracle catch in the deep – the miracle being that a member of the 50% club took a second catch. With 28 points in the B&D bank it was back to the Pelly to hook up with a victorious 2nd team and celebrate the new covers that were arriving this week – massive thanks to Chairman Miao.
