Match Report

1st XI v Stapleton (A)

Saturday, 29th July 2017
West of England Premier League
Bristol & North Somerset

Rain intervened in this game and despite being able to use the Duckworth Lewis scoring system to their advantage Chew managed to lose this game at a canter. Bowling first on a green top the Chew opening attack of Filer and Hosier kept the Stapleton batters under control taking two wickets in the process. Wickets fell regularly and at 85 for 6 Chew were well on top. however the Stapleton overseas, Tyrone Isitt, was playing well and his 88 out of 201 all out was the difference between the two sides. The Stapleton tail wagged and Chew should really have bowled out their hosts for somewhere around 150 but let them build a couple of good stands in the final 10 overs. After tea and with rain clouds looming Chew needed to be aware of the DL par score at 20 overs. This is the score they should have been aiming at. 20 overs constitutes a game and so ensuring they were passed that score at 20 overs would have meant an easy win. This score would be between 50 and 80 depending on the number of wickets lost. Sadly things didn't turn out that way and 0-1 and then 16-2 was the worst possible start. Wickets continued to tumble and when the rain did arrive at about 6 pm Chew were sunk at 126 for 8 with over 20 overs still to bowl. Gary Filer was the Chew Man of the Match with 10 excellent overs including 3 wickets and 39 not out off 43 balls. Lessons to be learnt here about how to bat to a DL target, and not try and finish the game in 10 overs, especially against a useful bowling attack. I am Disappointed of Droitwich.
