Match Report

2nd XI v Belvedere (A)

Saturday, 7th May 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 3 NE

Chew travelled to Weston with a mixture of youth, experience and one or two picked up at the last minute from the pub car park. The weather was cold but clear and the pitch was a belter. Flat, hard and no grass, looked full of runs.

Chew won the toss and chose to bat. We started slowly with King and Smith taking no chances early on. The scoring did get a little better, and at half way and we were 53 for 0 off 22. Then disaster, both openers gone in quick succession, and both to sloppy shots. Danny Gatton and Chris Hole came in to repair the damage and push up the rate. Both perished going for shots a bit early in their innings. To be fair the Belvedere bowling was pretty good, but on a shirt front like that, runs should have been coming at a good rate.

Sam Scraggs and Richard Mann took over, but at 90 for 4 the wheels came over good and proper. Scraggs gone cleaned out by the impressive Burgess, then Manny bowled round his legs by the off spinner for just 4. The tail wagged for a few brief overs before the last wicket fell with 4 overs left and the score on 112.

Belvedere got of to a nightmare start, 6 for 2 off 4. First the opener edged to Thomas at slip off Flynn, then the impressive Mark Hooper cleaned out the other opener, bowled off the inside edge. However the numbers 3 and 4 looked confident and experienced. They didn't panic, and slowly the score rose towards the target. Bowlers were changed, but nothing Captain Smith did could stop the rot. Belvedere won the match with a four, and the batsmen got to his fifty with the same shot.

Well and truly stuffed, but we did have a lop sided team with 6 adults and 5 youngsters who all did a great job in the field chasing after everything that moved.
