Match Report

1st XI v Wellington (A)

Saturday, 14th May 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

The first team headed to Wellington eager to improve on last weeks poor display against new boys Butleigh. the forecast was for gloom and possible rain. Chew batted first and lost Opener Andy Witcombe for a duck early on, and then Brent Roberts for just 4, caught down the leg side. Gatton and Beedell repaired the damage however and the score began to climb. Both managed splendid jug avoidance performances going for 45 and 48 respectively. This let in the Burley Mondair and Bones. The Burley score a controlled 63 not out, including some trade mark big hits. Meanwhile Bones after a week in the two's chipped in with a useful 25 not out. The Chew score stood at exactly 200 at tea.

After the interval the rain began in earnest and at times it looked likely that the teams would come off, however the umpires decided it was OK to go on, which was appreciated by some of the players. I suspect Brent might have had one or two words about that decision if anyone could have heard him under six layers of clothing. Rusty and Brent opened the bowling and removed the openers fairly quickly, but the game really turned with the introduction of leg spinner Richard Yeates. Richard took 7 for 53 off his 12 overs and alongside Jim Shearon who bowled a miserly 11 overs for 37 runs took control of the game for Chew. But with scotch mist falling and Wellington edging closer to the target it took a quick blast from Rusty to remove the last pair and win the game by just 25 runs.

We always seem to have close calls with our friends at Wellington, this year was once again no exception. Congratulations to Iain and the team on a first win of the season.
