Chew Magna second XI came into this game with several players unavailable and were therefore a bit understrength. Purnells batted first and Brady and Curtis enjoyed a good second wicket stand of 78. But after Brady went bowled by Neil Ogborne for 48, Curtis rapidly ran out of partners as Ogborne, captain Smith and latterly Thomas the Pie mopped up the long tail.
Curtis flailed away at one end whilst wickets tumbled at the other. When he was out in the 40th over had he amassed an impressive 69. The tail folded tamely and Purnells who were once at 102 for 2 fell away to 179 all out off the last ball of the 45th over.
Chew started badly when first Cooke was given out by a blind umpire, caught at the wicket, and then Ogborne missed a straight full toss. 10 for two after 3, sounds more like the ones to me! Captain Smith and C J Hole then repaired the damage with a 25 run partnership before Smithy was out caught behind for 7. This looked bleak at 32 for 3 when Thomas the Pie joined C J at the crease. But slowly and surely they repaired the damage and victory was even a distinct possibility. They put on 87 for the 4th wicket before Chris got a bit eager and swung across the line and was bowled leg stump for an excellent 64.
Richard Mann came in to join the Pie, and they set off once more for the target of 180. Sadly the wheels came right off when Thomas was caught behind for 38, and the fragile Chew tail was exposed. Manny kept going bravely, but when he was out for 20 the game was up. The juniors couldn't manage a run between them and were were all out for 145.
Still a good effort under the circumstances and 17 points in the bag. A special thanks to Will Broderick who ran miles and miles fielding at third man and fine leg, well done Wills.
