2nd XI v Uphill Castle (A)

Saturday, 11th June 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 3 NE

Chew Magna 2nd XI set off to the seaside with high hopes after their demolition of Horrington the previous week. With a strong side, including a new player Mark Anderton, they arrived at Clarence Park to find bottle tops, bits of old umbrellas and other such refuse scattered all round the outfield. The wicket looked pretty suspect too, there were tyre marks just outside off stump at one and and a large twig rolled into the wicket at the other. The surface was hard and flat, but some of those holes were as big as the one at Wookey.

Chew batted first and Captain Smith and the Pie went out to face the music. The "music" was not so much high pitch as low pitch. The sort where every fourth ball goes along the ground. The Uphill openers were tricky to get away, and the score crawled to 17 off 10 before the Pie flicked a full toss to a 5 year old lurking at midwicket. who needless to say took a stunning catch. In strode Oggie with his 4.99 bat tucked under his arm. One ball later he was striding off with it still stuck under his arm, now worth 3.99. Dan the Gatt came and went also for a duck, spooning a catch to mid off where an OAP took a diving, tumbling stunner to dismiss him.

Meanwhile Smithy was prodding and scratching around, not at the bowling, but at the wicket which was looking the worse for wear. 17 for 3 off 12 was poor even by our standards! Smithy and CJ did a small repair job before the both went in quick succession. Smithy caught for 26 and CJ for 10. New boy Mark "Ando" Anderton was in next, and with Manny pushed the score along against some less than spectacular cafeteria bowling. Ando Crashed 9 fours in his 42 before missing a low full toss. Manny, grumbling away at the non strikers end finished up with 25 before being cleaned out by their only genuine seamer, Hudson.

The tail wagged with Chris Holley bludgeoning a quick fire 14 and Higgo and Hoops bringing up the rear. The real star of the show was Mr Extras who just passed his half century in the final over. For this top effort he was rewarded with a round of applause from the crowd.

After what can only be described as a Harrods picnic hamper of a tea, the mayhem began. Holley steaming in from the Painter and Decorator's van end simply frightened the Uphill openers to death. Mind you it doesn't help when one goes along the ground and the next up your nose, especially at 70mph.

The Uphill batsmen crumbled under the onslaught and with Hoops the other end bowling his usual tight lines there was no way out for the luckless Uphillians. Indeed it truly was Uphill from then on. At 35 for 5 it was decided to give someone else a bowl. This was Charlie Thompson. Charlie was missing during our innings, we think he went to make some sand castles and have a go on the donkeys, but that's just a vicious rumour put about by some of the younger element. Charlie wheeled away for 5 overs without success, despite Higgo putting down a sitter at mid off.

Meanwhile at the other end Ando came on and blitzed the tail enders with pace and accuracy. 4 for 5 off 4 overs and it was game set and match. It has to be said the Uphill tail was a bit fragile, one or two were stepping on the umpire's toes as their stumps were shattered by another Ando missile.

Higgo came on and picked up his usual one for nought and we all trooped back, glad to get off the pitch alive. The showers were equally temperamental, one minute red hot, the next freezing cold. Funny place Clarence Park, but full of memories of past greats like Geoff Boycott and Viv Richards, Ian Botham and Warren Smith. Who?? Well anyway I'm not name dropping, but I did change in Boycott's place. At least I think I did, because it said Jeff Wuz Yer cut into the paneling in the corner, see you next week.
