2nd XI v Cheddar A (H)

Saturday, 2nd July 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 3 NE

Chew Magna second XI continued on their winning ways with an emphatic victory over Cheddar A at Chew Court. After mid week rain, the wicket was a bit juicy which gave the side bowling first a distinct advantage. Captain Smith duly won the toss and inserted the luckless cheesemen on the aforementioned sticky dog.

Holley and Hoops opened up the attack and it was obvious from early on that most of their top order were on the Strawberry line and not the off stump one. Chris Holley bowled with pace and accuracy which had the beating of the numbers one and two. In fact so good was the bowling that his first 8 overs cost just 13 runs, but without reward.
Hoops bowled his usual innies and was as economical as usual. With 16 overs gone the score was a paltry 37 for no wicket.

Wickets began to fall with the introduction of 'Mad' Bob Hurford and The Pie. Mad Bob had been on vacation to Lympsham for the first half of the season, but was back at the court due to contractual reasons. Can't say too much, but he has now sacked his agent. Anyway, these two veterans wheeled away for 24 overs and picked up 5 wickets between them as the cheesemen crumbled like a fifty year old Stilton. The wicket was doing plenty for the The Pie with his innies and outies. He even threw in a bouncer just to check if the batsman had nodded off.

Bob did his usual grenade on the spot routine and the Cheddar batsmen were soon running down the wicket, swinging and getting caught, or risking a stumping from the impressive Manny behind the timbers. After H & T were bowled out Smithy brought back the two H's to wrap up the tail. This they did within 5 overs to leave Cheddar well and truly cheesed off on 122 all out.

After a sumptuous banquet at the tea table courtesy of Mrs CJ, we got our batting heads on. First up it was the Dickie and Danny show as the Gattons paired up for the second time in two weeks. Sadly Danny went early for a Donald as he played over a yorker from the bowler, Crummy. Mr Crummy is possibly the tallest bowler ever to set foot on the hallowed turf of Chew Court. My guess is he stands at least 6 foot 7 inches tall. He dwarfs even me and I'm a good 5 foot 16 inches.

Anyway, more digression there, sorry sports fans. Well the dismissal of DG let in Chris Joyce, playing 3 games in a row for the first time since 1984. Well the experience of the two batsmen showed itself as they put the 8 Cheddar bowlers to the sword. Yes that's 8 bowlers. Cheddar tried everything they could, but Rich and Chris were just too good. After a mere 24.2 overs the game was over. Rich had 51 no and Chris 54 no. Top effort from the elder statesmen.

34 points in the bag and another win under our belts. Next up are league leaders Belvedere. That should be a match worth watching.
