Match Report

2nd XI v Taunton (A)

Saturday, 6th May 2006
Somerset Cricket League
Division 2

The first game of the season was played on what may well turn out to be the best track we see this year. Hard, flat and devoid of any green stuff it looked a batsmans paradise. Hardly surprising that when Warren won the toss he decided to bat first. Sadly he only lasted 5 balls before spooning a pull to midwicket. Matt wells, Oggy and Terry Chubb all went cheaply and we were on the rack at 26 for 4. But The Claw and Rich Gatton got things going in a mini stand of 34 before Rich was fingered by Warren after being hit in the families!

Luke came and went and after Skates whacked a couple even The Claw was gone. The tail wagged briefly as Scraggo walloped the opener Hutchinson for 4-6-4 in the last over, but it was too little too late on a shirt front that should have yielded 200 plus.

After a huge and most enjoyable tea we went out to field, and field and field etc etc yes you get the picture. The two Taunton openers were Bradbury and Pattemore, combined age of 147 but they got stuck into our bowling like they were after a quick clearance.

The Pie was as accurate as usual but without swing or seam. Skates tried some trundle without reward and even the great Terry Chubb couldn't entice a nibble from either of them. Luke, The Claw and Charlie all had ago but the runs just kept coming. Bradbury passed 50 and then so did Pattemore and then finally Skates back on with some leggers enticed the now red faced and wheezing Pattemore into a false stroke and Oggy took the catch at deep mid on.

Sadly they were only 5 runs from victory and we were duly dispatched next over. Congrats to Paul Bradbury for a lesson in batsmanship and also to Dave Pattemore for still being able to hook the Pie's viscous throat smashing bouncer for 4 runs. (just testing the eyesight there) Mines dodgy yours is OK.

So bad start, but I have to say Motty, that if their 3 stars play all season then I'd be willing to put 50p on them going straight back up. As for us, there's a long way to go yet boys!
