Match Report

2nd XI v Butleigh (H)

Saturday, 13th May 2006
Somerset Cricket League
Division 2

Our first home game of the season turned out to be a real nail biter, just who would win the FA cup? Seriously though, the goings on in Cardiff were just not up the carnage occurring at the Court. Warren won the toss again and put Butleigh into bat. The new partnership of Banks and Thomas opened the bowling. Both had the Butleigh boys in trouble early on and it was no surprise when wickets fell.

The wicket, to be frank, was pants with a big P. No pace, no bounce and with the new ball neither swinging or seaming there wasn't much in it for the batsman or the bowler. Upshot was wickets fell to good balls and bad ones were smashed to the fence after they had stopped, sat up and said hit me please.

However, the bowlers were on top and wickets fell regularly. Banks 2 and Thomas the Pie 2 and then Alan Locke, back after a short break of 2 years, with 5 for. The Claw picked up 1 and Butleigh were all out for 78 just as the second half was about to start. One of their players hit 41 which was a top effort while the rest just wilted under the onslaught.

We changed around and agreed to play 10 overs before tea. Dickie lasted 3 balls and we were 0 for 1. Then Scraggo up the order went for 8. Oggy the man for the job went in to patch things up. He just had to last until tea, out with 2 balls to go. CJ not happy as he went out to face the last ball.

After tea and with penalties looming, CJ went first ball for 0 and chased Oggy for at least half an hour before catching up with him. Matt, and Warren who was still there on 12 did manage some stability and took us within touching distance of victory before both getting out for 24. Back in the poo with 15 needed and wickets running out, The Claw went for 4, Banks and the Pie for ducks and it was down to Alan"Sid"Locke and Charlie Thompson to try and salvage the day.

Sid smoked the first ball back past the bowler and then a misfield and 2 runs left us with just 1 to win. A clip through mid wicket and we were home. Cheers all round as the Liverpool keeper saved yet another Hammers penalty and whoops from the Chew balcony as we pulled off a great escape. Congrats to the bowlers, aaarrrggghhhhh to the batsmen, wake up you lot, I'm too old for all this tension. So as Piggy Malone would have said 0 on the skill o meter and 10 on the excitement gauge.

Champagne moment Sid's one handed tumbling stunner of a caught and bowled. The CJ Numpty moment goes without doubt to the plank that is Oggy. Having just said to Warren, lets stay calm, just get to tea, he was out next ball driving to cover. What a wazzack! You should wear that dunces cap all week.

Here is some late news, My knee which exploded after 10 overs, has been seen by a top knee expert at the BRI, he said I should have retired 10 years ago! Now is that fair? Back next week for more Magna Mayhem as we face local rival Purnells at the Court.
