Match Report

2nd XI v Wellington (H)

Saturday, 3rd June 2006
Somerset Cricket League
Division 2

Summer arrived at Chew Court, and about time too. After the wettest May for 20 years we were wondering if we would ever see blue skies again. Today we welcomed Wellington to Chew Court. Just above us in the league and the sort of team we would want to beat if we were going to get ourselves up the table.

Warren lost the toss and we were asked to bowl. The Welly openers were kept in check by the accurate Pie who is now limping in off 4 yards, and new comer Mike Woolmore who bowled with some pace if not great accuracy. However first game of the season for Mike so he was a bit rusty early on. Along with a slow run rate over the first 16 overs Welly also lost 2 wickets as the Pie trapped one opener lbw and then bowled the other with an innie. Enter Stan Kirk and Alan Locke, and the wickets began to tumble. Stan 2 in 2 overs before Alan joined in and Welly looked very shaky at 56 for 5. Even the great D D Derreck couldn't get off the mark as he smashed a Locke long hop straight to buckets Kirk at point. Last man in was Green who was certainly the smallest player I've seen for many a year. He lasted 4 balls and Welly were all out for 115.

After tea courtesy of Madame Locke Chew set about the Welly opening attack which was of a reasonable standard. Wazza failed again, this time chipping a catch to mid on where the League's smallest player took the catch. Top effort Wazza, that's 3 catches in the last two seasons, one to a 15 year old girl, then a middle aged woman and now a 14 year old lad!

Chris Joyce joined Dickie at the crease and the two of them batted with great concentration and the runs soon came and Welly looked decidedly down and out. In fact it could have been a 9 wicket win except that Rich mistook Chris Joyce for former Olympic 100m champion Alan Wells and called for a risky run that even the great Scottish sprinter would have turned down. Chris run out by two yards went off muttering something in Afrikaans that no one could understand, but it may have include references to Wildebeast poo or something? Manny tried to exact revenge on Rich by running him out but was unsuccessful and with 3 wickets down we strolled to victory with 10 overs left.

All in all a good performance and 35 points in the bag. Champagne moment is Stans catch at point, a rocket of a shot from the bat of DD Derreck clung onto by 'The Cat'. The CJ Hole Numpty moment is shared, Rich for running out Alan Wells and Stan for dropping a sitter that my Gran could have caught, so for Stan its Zero to hero and for Rich its oh dear, but well batted on your 47 not out.

Back next week for more madness when 5 going yomping to Ilton. Sadly I'll be entertaining the outlaws and a dozen brats at the birthday bash, but I'm sure you'll all have a top time without me.
