Match Report

2nd XI v Wembdon 2 (H)

Saturday, 17th June 2006
Somerset Cricket League
Division 2

More sunny weather and on a shirt front prepared by curator Locke big scores looked on the cards. Smudge lost the toss and we trudged out into the furnace to face up to the Wembdon openers. Mike Woolmore and The Pie opened up. Indeed The Pie had the opener LBW early on and though Mike was a bit wayward he could have picked up the number 3 when he appeared to edge to Rich Gatton.

Alan 'Sid' Locke took over at the tree end and was out of luck as the now more confident embdon batsmen began to find the fence. Bob Hurford came on and spun his web to great effect as the Wembdon batters tried to slog him over the road. Bob kept his nerve and the wickets began to fall. In fact this was one big collapse, as our visitors went from 162 for 3 to 184 all out in the matter of just 9 overs. Stan 'The Cat' Kirk joined in the fun as he and Bob polished off the Wembdonians in fine style. Bob finished with 5 for and The Cat 3.

After tea Rich Gatton and Captain Smith went out to open up. Both got going but both perished for low scores. Don't forget this was a 220 wicket if ever I saw one (and I've seen one or two in the last 30 years) so 16 and 18 respectively isn't up to par. Bad boys you two, detention next week at nets. Meanwhile Chris Joyce and then Oggy steadied the ship and we sailed serenely towards our target. Chris went for 30 but despite losing Matt Wells for a splonjer Bob Hurford came in and the two of them took us to within striking distance before Bob was bowled for 24. Oggy looking good after his 70 n.o. against the Ilton 7th team last week went to 56 n.o. (sorry Oggers missed that jug, did you get beer or lager?) ably supported by The Cat who chipped in with 15. So another win and the Smith juggernaut roles on to North Perrott next week for what could be an even shorter shirt front, if you know what I mean.

The two awards this week; The Champagne moment was a toughy, but I've gone for Oggies monster 6 over the road from the legger, and the CJ Hole Numpty moment is once again shared. Firstly to Captain Wazzock for dropping their only run scorer on 47 (he went on to make 93 out of 184!) well done Warren, and also to Dickie who after plundering the Ilton 8th team for 123 retired last week contrived to scoop a slow long hop from the legger to mid wicket, how did you do that dad?. See you next time.
