2nd XI v Cheddar A (A)

Saturday, 3rd September 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 3 NE

Chew Magna Seconds gained promotion to Div 2 with a convincing 10 wicket demolition of Cheddar "A". Put into bat on a good wicket Cheddar were reduced to 16 for 4 off 18 overs by Mark Hooper and Rhys Thomas. Both in top form the Cheddar batsmen were all at sea as both bowlers picked up 2 wickets each. Captain Smith changed to Thompson and Hurford and the wickets continued to fall. Ogborne came on to replace Thompson who had picked up 1 for 12 off 6. Oggy did get a wicket second over, but after this lost his line a bit and the tail wagged feverishly to the tune of 35 runs.

Smith called back Thomas who rapped up proceedings when he had the impressive Pearce trapped lbw for 20. After tea Gatton and Joyce opened up for Chew. One or two scary moments early on were soon forgotten as they took command and began to play their shots. Chris Joyce in particular looked in good touch after his 4 week holiday in the Seychelles. Striking the ball with great confidence he finished on 37 no including a 6 and four 4's. Rich Gatton finished up with 25 no (four 4's) and the game was over as early as the 16th over. So 35 points in the bag, promotion to Div 2 assured, beers on Smithy then. Went back to Chew to watch the Ones tie with Staplegrove for the second time this year!

Numpty moment this week did not involve CJ, but goes to Matt Wells for his amazing run out attempt. The Cheddar batsman pushed the ball straight to him at cover and called for a single. There wasn't one there until Matt decided to throw the ball at 5 mph over Rich Gatton's head where it was caught by slip. By the time the ball was back at the stumps the non striker was in by 4 yards. Top effort Matt, great skills. See you at fielding practice next week!

The champagne moment was shared by two players. Number one, Chris Joyce took a stunning catch at slip to dismiss the dangerous looking Salway. Number two was Oggies run and catch off Bob Hurford. A big top edge went up many a mile and Oggie racing from deep mid wicket took a great catch sliding in on his knees. There was another possible candidate, but who am I to nominate The Pie for his outrageous off cutter which removed the opener for 4. Anyway I won't put that in because it'll just mean more stick.

Well its hooray for Smithy and the Ruthless Two's, next stop Division 2. See you next year for more catastrophic capers from Warren's Wallys.
