Match Report

1st XI v Wedmore (H)

Saturday, 12th May 2007
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

Rain washed out this league encounter between Chew Magna and Wedmore at Chew Court. After 5 weeks without rain, this week saw a change in the weather. 5 days of near continuous rain had turned the wicket into a bog. The game reduced to 40 overs a side at the start began with Wedmore winning the toss and putting Chew into bat. Witcombe and Gatton opened up and got the score to 41 off ten before they were both dismissed, which this started a mini collapse. Nick Beedell went bowled for 2, Ken Mondair LBW for 7 and Danny Gatton bowled by a swinging delivery for 4.

Chris Hole added some much needed stability in the middle order, but lost Ben Frawley for just 6 went the Perth man went for high full toss which was caught by the keeper. Many onlookers thought the ball may have been above shoulder height, but with the Hawk-eye not working again this week we will never know. After CJ went for an enterprising 20 which brought Mark "dad" "Ando" "Sheepie" Anderton to the wicket. Ando joined by veteran Iain Locke pushed the score on in the last 10 overs with Ando hitting a big 6 over long on and Lockie 4 fours in his 30 not out. Chew finished on 143 for 7 off their 40 overs which was a bit on the low side but never the less a competitive score.

After tea kindly supplied by Marina, Chew went after early wickets with Ando and Thomas opening the bowling. Ando picked up the opener second ball as Andy Witcombe took a smart overhead catch at mid wicket. Thomas then got in on the act removing the number three overseas with an outie that hit the top of off stump. 11 for 2 and looking good for Chew. Thomas then removed the other opener next over trapping the left hander in front. 17 for 3 off 8 and things really looking good.

Wedmore then dropped anchor and began the recovery, Mark Boley in particular looking to defend were necessary and hit anything off line. The score crept up and Nick "captain for the day" Beedell changed the bowling with Ben Frawley coming on at the tree end, and bringing himself on to try out some off spin from the other end. Not much happened for the next ten overs, Wedmore pushed the score up to 75 without too much trouble and Chew began to look for some inspiration when the heavens opened and heavy rain, which lasted about 15 minutes, turned the bog into a paddy field.

Game over and 22 points in the bag for Chew, which was a reasonable return in a game that was slipping away form them.

This weeks awards; The Champagne moment goes to Ando for the biggest 6 of the day. The CJ Hole Numpty moment goes to Ben Frawley for his poor impersonation of a Leighton Hewitt overhead smash. Strike one Oz!
