Match Report

2nd XI v Butleigh (H)

Saturday, 16th June 2007
Somerset Cricket League
Division 2

This rain affected match had draw written all over it as Butleigh hung on for dear life as the overs and wickets ticked away. Chew had only posted a modest total when Rich Gatton, 27 and Rich Yeates, 39 opened the batting. Tim Sage smashed 49 in typical Sage like fashion before a familiar collapse saw wickets thrown away and Chew bowled out in just 36 overs for 147.

Starting slowly Butleigh lost early wickets as the impressive Sam Kirk took 3 for 27 off his 12 and Butleigh decided to go for the rain affected draw. This seemed a good tactic as stout defence held at bay all that Chew could offer. Then cometh the hour etc etc and skipper Andy Witcombe threw the ball to Richard Yeates. With only three overs to go Butleigh needed an unlikely 50 to win, but were determined to see out those last three overs. With one over left they were 45 runs short but still had their 3 wickets intact. That is until the afore mentioned Yeates took over. Second ball the number 8 took a chance and tried to whack him over the top, caught mid on.

The next batsman shouldered arms first ball and was given lbw. One wicket to fall 3 balls to go. The number 11, nerves a jangling defended the first ball, but then played over the top of a yorker and was bowled. Victory with one ball to spare. Unbelievable is the only way I can describe it. Victory snatched from the jaws of Gloomsville Arizona. We played draw cricket for 25 years and had many a game that petered out to nothing. Hours spent looking at the clock, the overs ticking slowly by with some numpty practicing his forward defensive over after over. This game had that sort of atmosphere until Yeates' heroic last over.

Todays awards are as follows: The CJ Hole Numpty moment goes to Sam Kirk for getting caught on the fence after having agreed on a safety first policy until we reached 40 overs. This is closely followed by T Sage, A Witcombe, W Smith and A Locke for throwing it away to a pop gun attack with less bite than a geriatric pit bull with a full set. The Champagne moment goes to Richard Yeates who changed the game from Dullsville Arizona to Champagneville New Mexico in just 4 minutes. Quality Skates (unlike the tacky merchandise you are hawking round the Queen's at the moment).
