Match Report

1st XI v Pak Bristolians (H)

Saturday, 3rd May 2008
Bristol & District Cricket League
Senior Division

Chew's first game in the Bristol & District League was a very one sided affair, with the visitors, Pak Bristolians, defeated by 7 wickets. The Chew Court pitch was very soft and although well grassed offered no hope of any pace or bounce. The Pak Bristolian batsmen went after the bowling like it was a 20-20 and suffered the inevitable consequences. The two Filer brothers Dave and Gary opened the bowling for Chew and dominated the batsmen from the word go. Each flamboyant shot cost the batman his wicket but they did not seem to realise that the only way to play on this type of track is to be patient.

Dave took 4 for 25 off 11 and Gary 2 for 40 of 14, ripping the heart out of the visitors batting. Mark Anderton cleaned up the tail with 3 for 18 off 3.3. Even the last man out went bowled going for a big heave over mid wicket. Will they never learn? Well no, not yet at least.

After an excellent Marina Tea, Chew took the field with Mike Denning and Andy Witcombe. Both batted patiently until Mike went caught bat pad for 8. The Mighty Mondair was next up, fresh from his ton last week. Sadly cricket can be a cruel game, and Ken duly obliged with a duck, LBW.

Richard Gatton came and went for 9, he got the only ball to bounce all day and gloved to the keeper standing up. Oggy up next and with Chew 38 for 3 we looked very slightly shaky. But Andy and Oggy dug in and pushed and blocked, and did all the things you should on a sticky wicket. Hit the occasional bad one and slowly we edged to our target with plenty of overs to spare. Andy top scored with 39 not out, 5 fours and 1 six, and Oggy came in with 20 not out, 2 sixes.

So a good win in our first game, but we all know this is not representative of the rest of the division. In fact Pak Bristolians did have some useful players, particularly the young off spinner who bowled from the tree end. But they will need a lot more application and a little less flair if they are to avoid a successive relegation.
