Match Report

1st XI v Staplegrove (A)

Saturday, 2nd July 2005
Somerset Cricket League
Division 1

High flying Chew Firsts suffered a setback to their promotion aspirations when they were held to a controversial tie at Staplegrove. Chasing 156 to win Chew got off to a bad start losing Andy Witcombe and Neil Ogborne for 5 and 0. Nick Beedell and Brent Roberts followed soon afterwards for 4 and 10.

It wasn't until Garry Filer came and joined Paul King that things settled down a bit. Paul finally went for 21, but Garry was then joined by 'Ando' and they set about steering Chew to victory. Gary was out for a very creditable 41 and then things turned a bit sour as 3 controversial umpiring decisions led to a mini collapse. But with Rusty and Jim Shearon at the wicket, scores level and three overs left a Chew victory seemed in the bag. Unfortunately another decision against the visitors saw Jim being given out caught behind down the leg side, and the game was tied.

Earlier in the day Chew had restricted their hosts to just 156 for 9 on a slow low wicket. "Ando" picked up 4 for 32 off his 12 and Jim 'the pipe' Shearon continued his miserly bowling conceding just 18 off his 8 overs and picking up 3 wickets into the bargain. Chew picked up 24 points and are still very much in the promotion hunt as we pass the halfway point of the season.
