Match Report

1st XI v Timsbury (H)

Saturday, 7th August 2010
Bristol & District Cricket League
Senior Division

Chew lost this game by just 2 wickets off the last ball of the game when the Timsbury batsman inside edged a Charlie Thompson yorker to the fine leg boundary. Timsbury had needed two to win of the last ball.

The game was played in a very competitive spirit after it was discovered ex Chew allrounder Dave Filer who had recently been transferred from Chew to Timsbury on the eve of the transfer deadline was picked to play against his old team mates. This went against what had been agreed by the two clubs, and added a certain amount of spice to the fixture.

Chew batted first on a reasonable track and found the Timsbury openers ready to give it 100% in this now grudge match.

Ogborne caught in the gully was first to go for just 4, and then Gatton also caught went for just 10. Mike Denning and Tejas steadied the ship until Denning was caught and bowled by Hare with the score on 47.

Tejas batted on and passed 50 only to be bowled two overs later trying to increase the scoring rate.

The tail fell away and although Thompson and Mondair managed 17 each, Chew were bowled out in the 44th over for 164 which never really looked enough.

After tea, Chew tried to keep a lid on the Timsbury openers Sage and Pippett by opening up with Iain locke and Ken Mondair. This backfired badly and Timsbury were 40 without loss after 5 overs.

Captain Mondair then turned to spin and seam as he brought on Tejas and Thomas.

This worked as the Timsbury openers were soon dismissed by Thomas and then Carther followed soon after for a duck. Tejas had Storey stumped by Gatton for 5 and Timsbury were looking very shakey at 78 for 4.

Hare was run out for 5 and it looked odds on a Chew victory. Enter Dave Filer to one or two comments from his ex team mates. Give him his due though he took all the sledging in good spirit and produced a match winning 32 before being bowled by Charlie Thompson, who gave him a right royal send off back to the pavilion.

Filer's 32 had put Timsbury in a position to win the match though the introduction of Anderton, somewhat fired up after the Filer affair did threaten to put it back in the mix as he dismissed Passingham for 17.

Thompson picked up another before the final climax. 13 to wim off 2 overs, 2 wickets to fall. Andertons last ball went for an all run 4 and Timsbury needed just 6 off the last over.

Thompson was the bowler and bowled well with Hucker and Clothier doing a lot of swinging but not scoring too many. It all came down to the last ball and with two to win Thompson's yorker was inside edged off middle stump for four.

The Timsbury players went mad in celebration, some more than the situation warranted, but it was a sad end for Chew to a very close game.
